Happy Birthday Sir Richard Starkey
This was Ringo’s first “Solo” single from his first “Solo” album. It was a Country album recorded it in Nashville and feature musicians like Scotty Moore & D.J. Fonatana both used to play for Elvis Presley. The single peaked at No. 87 on Billboard’s Hot-100.
Ringo’s second Top-10 single in the U.S.A. was “Back Off Boogaloo” also written by Ringo and was poking fun at the other three Beatles who were “Duking It Out” in court at the time. The single went to No. 9 in 1972.
Both “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Back Off Boogaloo” were produced by George Harrison.
“Oh My My” was a song co-written by Richard Starkey (Ringo) and Vini Poncia. The song also features Merry Clayton & Martha Reeves on Back-Up Vocals. The single went to No. 5 on Billboard’s charts here in the U.S.A.
The first single was a cover of the song “Only You” made famous by the Platters in 1955. The song peaked at No. 5 in the spring of 1974.Peaking at No. 3, the second signle was “The No No Song” written by Hoyt Axton. The single did not come in a picture sleeve here in the U.S. Hoyt was also famous for writting songs like “Joy To The World” by Three Dog Night, “Greenback Dollar” by the Kingston Trio and “Never Been To Spain” also by Three Dog Night. Hoyt’s Mom, Mae Axton, wrote “Heartbreak Hotel” for Elvis Presley. Songwritting runs in the family eh?
The “Flip” side of this single, “Snookeroo” also charted and was written by Elton John & Bernie Tauin.
“It’s All Down To Goodnight Vienna” the ‘Theme’ and 3rd single from the L.P. of the same name was written by John Lennon. It made it’s way up to No. 31 on the U.S. charts. In all Sir Starkey has scored seven (7) Top-10 singles, MORE than George Harrison and almost as many as John Lennon who has eight.
I remember seeing John Lennon on the Mike Douglas T.V. show in the early 1970’s. During an interview on the show he was asked about Ringo and said “You know when the Beatles broke up, everyone was worried about Ringo and his recording carrer. But the fact is, he’s doing better than me”.
In fact Ringo still records on a regular basis and is still going strong even in the “New Millennium”. He has recorded a total of 19 studio albums, 10 Live albums, 6 compelation albums, 22 music videos, and 26 singles.
“Sir” Paul inducts “Sir” Ringo into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a “Solo” artist. Now all four (4) Beatles are in the HOF as members of the band AND as solo artists. NO OTHER BAND has accomplished this feat!
In the words of Ringo Starr “Peace, remeber Peace is how we make it”.
