Sir Ringo Starr

Happy Birthday Sir Richard Starkey

Ringo01July 7th, 1940 is the birthday of my FAVORITE Beatle Ringo Starr.

This was Ringo’s first “Solo” single from his first “Solo” album. It was a Country album recorded it in Nashville and feature musicians like Scotty Moore & D.J. Fonatana both used to play for Elvis Presley. The single peaked at No. 87 on Billboard’s Hot-100.

Ringo02My FAVORITE song by my FAVORITE Beatle. “It Don’t Come Easy” was written by Richard Starkey (A.K.A. Ringo Starr). It was certified Gold (A Million Seller) in 1971 and peaked at No. 4 on Billboard.

Ringo03Ringo’s second Top-10 single in the U.S.A. was “Back Off Boogaloo” also written by Ringo and was poking fun at the other three Beatles who were “Duking It Out” in court at the time. The single went to No. 9 in 1972.

Both “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Back Off Boogaloo” were produced by George Harrison.

Ringo041973 saw Ringo go all the way to the top of the charts with the song “Photogrpah”. It was co-written by Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) and George Harrison.

Ringo05Ringo’s “Cover” of the Johnny Burnett song “You’re Sixteen” also went to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot-100. Both “You’re Sixteen” and “Photograph” were certified Gold by the R.I.A.A.

Ringo08“Oh My My” was a song co-written by Richard Starkey (Ringo) and Vini Poncia. The song also features Merry Clayton & Martha Reeves on Back-Up Vocals. The single went to No. 5 on Billboard’s charts here in the U.S.A.

Ringo2LPThe three singles above, “Photograph”, “You’re Sixtenn” and “Oh My My”, all came from Ringo’s solo L.P. simply titled “Ringo”. This album went to No.2 on Billbaord’s Album chart.

Ringo4LPSir Starr followed up his “Ringo” album with “Goodnight Vieenna”. It was another Top-10 million selling L.P. with three (3) hit singles off of it as well.

Ringo06The first single was a cover of the song “Only You” made famous by the Platters in 1955. The song peaked at No. 5 in the spring of 1974.Ringo09Peaking at No. 3, the second signle was “The No No Song” written by Hoyt Axton. The single did not come in a picture sleeve here in the U.S. Hoyt was also famous for writting songs like “Joy To The World” by Three Dog Night, “Greenback Dollar” by the Kingston Trio and “Never Been To Spain” also by Three Dog Night. Hoyt’s Mom, Mae Axton, wrote “Heartbreak Hotel” for Elvis Presley. Songwritting runs in the family eh?

The “Flip” side of this single, “Snookeroo” also charted and was written by Elton John & Bernie Tauin.

Ringo07“It’s All Down To Goodnight Vienna” the ‘Theme’ and 3rd single from the L.P. of the same name was written by John Lennon. It made it’s way up to No. 31 on the U.S. charts. In all Sir Starkey has scored  seven (7) Top-10 singles, MORE than George Harrison and almost as many as John Lennon who has eight.

I remember seeing John Lennon on the Mike Douglas T.V. show in the early 1970’s. During an interview on the show he was asked about Ringo and said “You know when the Beatles broke up, everyone was worried about Ringo and his recording carrer. But the fact is, he’s doing better than me”.
